14 Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble. Proverbs 28:14; NLT
Thoughts
Fear is a strange thing; it can keep us safe or prevent us from stepping out in faith. The verse today talks about the benefit of fear — prevention of sin (wrong). Sin, whether inward (pride, lust, covetousness, etc) or outward (angry words, physical violence, etc) separate us from a relationship with God. As Christians, that relationship is restored when we confess our sins and turn to Jesus to save us from the punishment of our sin — but we never lose the capacity to sin and suffer its effects.
I am fearful of failing in life; “Will my angry words cause lasting scars on the children?” — “Will my ego and pride bring about public humiliation?” — “Could I dishonour my marriage vows?”
I never want to lose the assurance of God’s forgiveness; but I also want to be ever aware of the consequences of my sin. Learning to listen and follow my conscience, being sensitive to God’s discipline, and being quick to confess my failures, are all “skills” that need constant development and refinement. I appreciate God’s patience!
Prayer
Father thank you for your gentle discipline when I fail — thank you for your encouragement when my actions and thoughts please you. Give the children ears to hear conviction and the wisdom to repent and run from them. Help me to be a better husband and father; and thank you for Aleta — Happy Birthday! In Jesus precious and Holy name; Amen
