27 It’s not good to eat too much honey,
and it’s not good to seek honors for yourself. Proverbs 25:27 NLT
Thoughts
The proverb today offers some of the best advice you can get; live a life of humility. The first half of the proverb speaks to not living a life of excess — If you can afford to drive a Lexus, buy a Ford — If you can eat steak every meal, eat cornbread and peas instead — Buy clothes from the second hand store even if you can afford to shop on New York’s 5th Avenue. Too much of a “good” thing is not good for you; if you are not careful the luxuries of life will become tasteless and unfulfilling — starting you on a lifelong pursuit of “stuff” that will never satisfy.
The last part of the proverb warns us against thinking “highly” of ourself; comparing our self-worth to others. I work harder — I am smarter — I am more attractive — I made better grades — I am more skilled. Get the picture? You will always feel like the victim if you continually compare your “lot” in life against others. Be humble; remember that you are nothing apart from Christ. It is honours from God that you should desire and not the accolades of men.
This world, and the things of it, are passing away quickly — don’t fall in love with it.
Prayer
Father thank you for reminding me today that your plan for my life is not always my plan. Help me to see past the world’s siren song and make your desires, my desires. Give the children the wisdom and insight they will need to navigate through this wicked world they are in. Thank you so much for Jesus, in whose name I ask this; Amen
