“Those who speak for themselves want glory only for themselves, but a person who seeks to honour the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies.”

Thoughts
John 7 • The book of James refers to the tongue as “an uncontrollable evil” full of “poison”; a small part of the body, but with the capacity to maim and destroy. But when controlled by the Spirit of God, the tongue can be a transporter of blessing, encouragement, health, and healing. Chapter 7 of John’s Gospel is a glimpse into the conversations of family, public sceptics, religious leaders, and true “searchers” surrounding Jesus; full of sarcasm, fear, lies, and genuine questions.

When we look at what Jesus’ family was saying, it is ironic that James is a participant in hurling insults and sarcastic words at Jesus; “If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!” harsh words spoken by brothers to a brother. It is a reminder that “familiarity” can sometimes blind us from seeing and hearing truth.

The crowds that were following Jesus around were also voicing opinions about “who” he really was; some called him a good man while others said he was a fraud. But no one was willing to speak out or speak up. Fear of being labelled a follower and the anticipated wrath that label would bring kept many around Jesus from commitment. The same is true today; a life of faith that is lived out in public opens us up to ridicule and for some, severe persecution.

The final group offering commentaries were the religious leadership; speaking with one voice (with one exception, Nicodemus), they found comfort within the perceived safety of their organization. This group had no issue with labelling Jesus a phony; his fakery leading the masses astray. Verses 48 and 49 illustrates their contempt and arrogance; “Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him? This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!”

The Pharisees treatment of Jesus and his followers serves as a reminder today that power and education do not equal strength and wisdom. It doesn’t matter if you are looking at the United States, France, or Syria, (pick any nation) those with education and power feel they know what is best and will go to any length to impose their beliefs and understanding upon the citizenry. Let’s not forget the warning in Proverbs 10:6; “…words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.”

“This is not my message; it comes from God who sent me. If you truly want to do God’s will, you will see that what I am teaching you is in fact from God. Those who speak for themselves only want to bring attention to them, but a person who seeks to honour the one who sent him speaks truth, not lies. I am speaking the truth.” Jesus Christ
