34 The LORD mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble. Proverbs 3:34 NLT
What does a mocker look like today? The Hebrew word used here is luwts; it literally means to make fun of someone. It carries the connotation of using someone’s accent or speech impediment in a conversation with the individual. The mocker seeks to humiliate and intimidate; publically destroying with words that all can hear and see.
I wish I could say I had never mocked someone; but I can’t. Tearing down others to elevate oneself is akin to sport. Hearing the laughter of those around as you “mock” and “make fun” of someone is the reward for a quick wit and a smart mouth.
The proverb today reminds us that God will have the last word; all our private conversations are being noted and documented for judgement one day. Be careful today with what you say; building others up rather than trying to tear them down. If you are on the receiving end; be humble and know that you have an advocate.
Father help me with my mouth and attitude; I really desire to build others up but there are so many times that I speak before thinking. Forgive me. In Jesus’ name; Amen
